Tateyama REPORT

2026.06.18Car Transfer Service, Pt. 1 / Sunny

If you want to experience every highlight of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, here’s an interesting comparison: For a group of four adults making a round trip between Ogizawa Station and Tateyama Station, the total comes to ¥19,680 × 4, plus ¥1,000 for parking—a grand total of ¥79,720. By contrast, traveling one way and using a car transfer service costs ¥10,940 × 4, plus a car transfer fee of ¥27,000, for a total of ¥70,760. Not only does the car transfer option cost less, it also lets you experience more scenery without having to retrace your steps. With the cooperation of Omachi Traffic, I’ll be taking you on a one-way journey from Ogizawa Station to Tateyama Station, and onward all the way to the Sea of Japan.

At the appointed time, I arrived at the Ogizawa General Information Center after making my reservation through the Omachi Traffic website. A staff member in a red vest (pictured, right) handed me a vehicle transfer form, which I filled out with my name, address, and phone number before heading to the reception desk on the second floor. After paying the transfer fee, I received my receipt and was given a brief explanation of how the rest of the day would proceed.

While that was taking place, another staff member inspected the vehicle for any existing damage before driving it away toward the destination. Carrying only the luggage I would need for sightseeing along the Alpine Route, I headed for Ogizawa Station and boarded the 7:30 a.m. Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus. Stepping out at Kurobe Dam, I was greeted by the mirror-like surface of Lake Kurobe beneath a brilliantly blue sky (pictured).

After spending about forty minutes exploring the area around Kurobe Dam—the largest arch dam in Japan—I boarded the 8:30 a.m. Kurobe Cable Car to Kurobedaira. Following a stop at the Kurobedaira Panorama Terrace to admire the sweeping views across Tanbo-daira, I continued at 9:10 a.m. aboard the Tateyama Ropeway (pictured) to Daikanbo. The Tateyama Ropeway is the longest ropeway in Japan to use a single-span system with no support towers. (To be continued in Car Transfer Service, Pt. 2)
