Tateyama REPORT

2026.05.16Tateyama Murodo, Pt. 1 / Sunny

From Murodo (2,450m above sea level), the Tateyama Tunnel Electric Bus descends slightly to Daikanbo (2,316m), where a short “snow tunnel” (pictured) sits along the path to the Cloud Terrace. Passing through this chilly, otherworldly corridor, the vast landscape of Tanbo-daira suddenly opens up before you. Behind the terrace was also a “snow pocket,” where part of the snow wall had been hollowed out into a space large enough for people to step inside.

By the way, the official Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route website has a very useful station and terminal guide page for understanding the overall layout of the route. Tanbo-daira (pictured) was still heavily covered in lingering snow during my visit. Later on, I boarded the Tateyama Ropeway (pictured, center) and enjoyed sweeping views of the spring mountain scenery from the same eye level as the swallows darting through the air.
[Daikanbo]

I then descended further via the Kurobe Cable Car to Kurobe Dam. After spending hours immersed in the snowy world around Murodo, the fresh greenery I had seen earlier that morning somehow felt even more vibrant and refreshing. The new spring foliage around Kurobe Gorge (pictured) was especially beautiful. Even on the drive back from Ogizawa Station along Prefectural Route 45, stunning spring green continued almost all the way to Omachi Onsen-kyo.

Up at Murodo-daira, a warm insulated jacket felt just right, but by late morning at Kurobe Dam, even a single long-sleeve shirt felt hot. The dam’s famous sightseeing water discharge will begin on 6/26 (Fri.) this year, which also marks the 55th anniversary of the full opening of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. So, with the cooperation of Omachi Traffic, Snownavi plans to do something a little different — instead of our usual report covering only the Ogizawa-to-Murodo section, we hope to continue all the way to Tateyama Station and then drive back along the Sea of Japan side for a complete report of the full report.
