I met a family from Ibaraki Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “The last time we came to Kusatsu Onsen was before our children were born. We’ve been lucky with the weather, and the views are beautiful. We’re staying one night and plan to explore the area around Yubatake tomorrow.” After our conversation, I took a break at Tengu Deck and indulged in a ¥700 “Starry Sky Lemonade” from one of the food trucks, enjoying the view over the town below.

For lunch today, I headed to the Food Park on the second floor of the Center House (pictured). The menu features a wide variety of dishes made with local ingredients, including the popular Tengu Chinese-style ramen. (Pets are also welcome on the terrace seating in the rear of the photo.) A highly detailed diorama depicting the area from Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane all the way down to Kusatsu Onsen is also on display in one corner of the floor (pictured, rear right).

To the right when facing Tenguyama are beautifully maintained courses for miniature golf, mallet golf, and SNAG golf. At the 18-hole putting course, I met two visitors from Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured), one of whom told me, “I won by nine strokes! (laughs) I’ve been to Kusatsu Onsen three or four times, but this is her first visit. We’re staying one night and making the most of our time in Kusatsu.”

The resort is very pet-friendly, with a dog run (pictured) and pets welcome throughout the outdoor areas. A couple from Takasaki City visiting with their dog Leo (pictured) told me, “Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort is a great place to bring a dog. It’s nice and cool today, too, so it feels wonderful.” I saw plenty of other visitors with pets throughout the day, particularly small dogs.
