On clear days, SKY TERRACE offers sweeping views of the Yatsugatake Mountains and Mt. Fuji. A long-sleeve shirt felt just right at the summit of Kurumayama, where visitors could be heard exclaiming things like, “Wow, it’s so cool up here!” and “The views are incredible!” Many stopped to take photos against the panoramic backdrop. By around 10 a.m., hikers arriving from Kurumayama Kata and the Sky Liner base station had joined the crowd, and the summit grew noticeably busier.

Next to SKY TERRACE stands Kurumayama Shrine (pictured), dedicated to Oyamazumi-no-Mikoto, revered as a god of the mountains and protector of nature. The shrine was surrounded by swarms of Akiakane dragonflies, and goshuin stamps are available from the shrine office on the first floor of Sky Plaza. On 10/10 (Sat.), the “Kurumayama Shrine Grand Festival: Shinto-Buddhist Harmony & Peace Memorial Festival” will also be held.

After taking in the sweeping views from the summit, I started back down by lift. Riding the Sky Panorama Lift, I enjoyed a beautiful view of Lake Shirakaba (pictured, back right) that I hadn’t noticed on the way up. On the hiking trail below to the left, I could also see a few people making their way down on foot.

Back at Sky Plaza, the smell of charcoal-grilled rainbow trout and corn immediately caught my attention. The “Rainbow Trout Catching Event,” which began here at 11 a.m., follows a simple rule: “If you want to eat one, catch it yourself.” Participants rolled their pants up to their knees, stepped into the temporary pool, and did their best to catch the lively rainbow trout swimming around inside (pictured).
