Maiko Snow Resort and the wider Yuzawa area benefited from heavy snowfall brought by the season’s strongest and longest cold waves, from 1/20 (Tue.) to 1/26 (Mon.) and again from 1/29 (Thu.) to 2/3 (Tue.). This morning, the RunRun Course (pictured) was groomed into a firmly-set packed powder surface, and after passing the Sky Dome Restaurant (pictured, background), which is open on weekends and holidays only, I dropped into the RanRan Course.

The long RanRan and ByunByun Courses both featured well-compacted, “powdery-feeling” groomed wet snow. I took the Shuttle Pair to cross from the Nagamine Area to the Maiko Area, then skied the gentle Bambi Course, which was also groomed into firm, easy-to-ski wet snow. At the snow park accessed from the Maiko Triple, the 7 m and 8 m kickers (pictured) were sending riders skyward one after another.

One of the diggers (pictured) working at the snow park, which opens at 10 a.m., told me, “I’ve seen Snownavi before. We’ve built this park so that everyone from beginners to advanced riders can enjoy it, so please come and check it out.” By the way, the Snow Park is also scheduled to host the “SNOWSTYLE FUN SESSION” on 3/15 (Sun.). After finishing my coverage, I was tempted to sneak in a little solo practice in the hike-up park.

As the clouds gradually broke apart, blue skies spread overhead by around 10 a.m. Four visitors from Tokyo I met told me, “We love the long courses that run alongside the gondola, so we often come to Maiko on day trips. Being a weekday, the expressway was quiet today, too—and the views are incredible!” (*The Maiko Area is pictured on the left, with the Maiko Kogen Hotel down to the right.)
