Myoko Suginohara REPORT

2026.02.19170 cm / Post-Snow Sunshine

Just like the start of the season, and again during the three major cold waves that came in succession starting in mid-January, Suginohara is still in excellent shape and has been especially blessed with snowfall this winter. Perhaps because of the solid snowfall overnight, a long line had already formed for the Suginohara Gondola 30 minutes before opening (pictured), even though it was a weekday. Early this morning, fine snow was falling lightly in the crisp morning air.

I headed straight for the Super Giant Course (pictured), which I had been eyeing since yesterday. This ungroomed steep slope (maximum 38°, average 17°, 1,000 m long) had 20 to 30 cm of slightly moist fresh snow and was smooth and untracked. I was knocked off balance a few times by hardpacked bumps buried beneath the new snow, but advanced skiers skillfully absorbed or even played off those hidden features as they made their way down.

Later on, I skied from the upper to the lower Panorama Slope on the well-packed, “powder-like” moist snow base and rode the Suginohara No. 1 Romance Lift. Incidentally, this lift — like all lifts at Suginohara — is equipped with footrests, which makes for a comfortable ride. In other news, the snow park on the Panorama Slope will host the “SNEAKY SNAKE 2026” event on 3/14 (Sat.).
[Family R Course]

Lapping the Giant Course down into Shirakaba via the gondola felt fantastic first thing in the morning. The Giant Course and the upper half of Shirakaba, which had been groomed early, offered firm corduroy topped with about 10 cm of soft fresh snow. The new snow had been pressed into the surface by the groomers on the lower half of Shirakaba, resulting in nicely compacted packed powder conditions. I heard plenty of comments like, “Wow, this feels amazing!” and “This is the best!” from skiers who had just come down.
