After the early-morning wave of climbers heading toward Mt. Hakuba Norikura had eased, Tsugaike Nature Park began to grow busier once more around 9:30 a.m. At 7:30 a.m., the temperature inside the Nature Park was a cool 17°C, even lower than on my previous visit, and with the refreshing breeze I was able to enjoy walking the trails without working up too much of a sweat despite the intense sunshine.

Among the alpine flowers in bloom, yachi-torikabuto (pictured), particularly around the Mizubasho and Ukishima marsh areas, oyama-rindo growing at ground level throughout the park, and iwashobu in the various wetlands were all at their peak. Sobana was also in blooming beautifully along the breezy Yase-One ridge, while miyama akinokirin-so, Tateyama-azami, misogawa-so, and yamahahako were looking quite nice as well.

With the summer holidays in full swing, there were plenty of families enjoying the park, and at the Kusukawa river I saw children smiling as they dipped their hands into the cold water. Tsugaike is currently giving away a limited-edition “Ropeway Card” free of charge to visitors who request one at the Ticket Center. (*Limited to the first 100; available while supplies last.) It makes a great souvenir for children who love trains, lifts, and other forms of transport.

At around 10 a.m., many hikers were taking a break at the Tenbo Marsh (pictured). The Hakuba Daisekkei snowfield and Hakuba Sanzan peaks were hidden by clouds, but the occasional breeze made it a pleasant place to cool down. Most of the park is covered by well-maintained boardwalks, and even the dirt sections of trail were dry and firm, making for comfortable walking throughout.
