After around three hours from Murodo Terminal, I reached the summit of Mt. Oyama (3,003 m), the principal peak of the Tateyama Range. Following a short break, I continued on to Mt. Onanji (pictured, 3,015 m), but clouds rolling in from the west had begun to cover the ridge leading onward to Fuji-no-Oritate (2,999 m), Masago-dake (2,861 m), and Bessan (2,880 m), so I quickly turned back.

Around lunchtime, the summit office of Oyama Shrine (pictured) was bustling with hikers enjoying their meals and the views. Looking down toward the lower left of the photo, I could see Gozenzawa Glacier, the first glacier in Japan to receive formal scientific recognition. Visitors continued to stream into the shrine at the summit, and after each prayer ceremony, voices could occasionally be heard ringing out in three celebratory cheers of “Banzai!”

Large numbers of Hakusan-ichige (pictured), Chishima-gikyo, Kumoma-miminagusa, and Ezo-shiogama were blooming between just below Ichinokoshi and the summit of Mt. Oyama. Summer is the breeding season for rock ptarmigans and usually offers a better chance of spotting them, but today’s bright sunshine and the frequent arrival of supply helicopters kept them out of sight. On mistier days, however, the possibility of encountering one adds another pleasure to the climb.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is currently holding its 2026 Tateyama Kurobe Summer Journey campaign. “Mountain Day Days 2026” will take place from 8/8 (Sat.) to 8/11 (Tue., public holiday), with talk events, exhibition booths, guided walking sessions, and more. “The Ministry of the Environment × Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route event, Strolling Around Tateyama 2026,” will also be held on 8/9 (Sun.).
