A “tech test” hosted by the Kurohime Snowboarding School took place on Blackbird (pictured) today. This test is a higher-level certification above the JSBA Level 1 badge test, administered by the Japan Snowboard Association. The categories are Tech 1 (for Level 1 holders), Tech 2, and Tech 3 (the highest level). Incidentally, I hold Tech 2.

I spoke with one of the participants, who told me, “I always read your reports. I want to pass the Tech Test 2 as the finale to my season and celebrate with a great meal.” Today, Blackbird and Leo had firm, groomed, corn snow, but the surface started to soften early. A clean mogul lane ran between the two courses.

A lift operator told me, “We had a low-snow season, but we also had few rainy days, and average temperatures were slightly lower than normal. Because of that, the snow should last through the final day of the season. The forecast calls for clear weather over the three-day weekend, so we hope a lot of people come out.” Around 10 a.m., Dog (pictured) had groomed corn snow that had softened and turned loose and slushy.

Mouse (pictured) was covered in rime ice, and had two distinct sections: the upper half of the run had a firm, uneven granular snow base with about 1 cm of moist new snow on top. The lower half had groomed, firm corn snow. All runs were open except for the ungroomed Snake. Tiger and Weasel had a few areas of thin snow coverage, but they did not affect skiing.
