The season at Kurohime Kogen Snow Park is down to its final week. The official base depth sits at 50 cm up top and 20 cm lower down, which is on the thin side. Still, the well-maintained runs showed only a few faint brown patches and no exposed brush. A light, cool northerly breeze blew this morning under clear blue skies.

Mt. Kurohime (2,053 m, first photo) and Mt. Myoko (2,454 m) looked beautiful covered in rime ice, so I decided to ride the No. 8 Pair for the views. Weasel (pictured) is a gentle run that winds widely and skis longer than it looks. It started out as firm, groomed corn snow early on, but the surface began to soften around 9 a.m.

Tiger also had firm, groomed corn snow, and the surface softened as the morning went on, giving it a smooth, consistent feel underfoot. I met a family from Kanagawa (pictured) who told me, “Yesterday was our dog’s first time in the mountains, and she kept getting distracted by the falling snow and didn’t move much. Today, with the nice weather, she’s running around full of energy. We’re staying tonight at the dog-friendly Kurohime Kogen Hotel (the red-roofed building on the right).”

“The snow feels great. It makes you want to push yourself and work on your riding,” said an instructor from the Kurohime Snowboarding School, whom I spoke with first thing in the morning. Leo and Monkey had a firm, groomed surface where granular and moist snow had been mixed and packed together, and the top layer softened as the morning progressed. The shaded areas stayed firm, while the sun-exposed sections still offered strong edge hold.
