Ontake REPORT

2026.03.0880 cm / Sunny

Although the official website doesn’t make much effort to highlight it, Ontake is running early morning operations on weekends now through the final day of the season on 4/5 (Sun.). With that, the Karamatsu Pair Lift starts spinning at 7:30 a.m.! This morning, I spoke with two skiers from Aichi (pictured, very back) who told me, “We always read your reports! We come to Ontake almost every weekend. We love moguls and spend time building lines and skiing them. Today’s moguls are great—there’s a firm base with soft snow on top, so they’re really fun to ski.” As we talked, a few more mogul lovers gathered around and we ended up taking a group photo together.

The Central Course (pictured) was groomed and set up with a well-packed moist snow surface. The early morning low of -10°C helped the surface tighten up, and it felt almost like true packed powder, and was extremely easy to ski. The groomed sections of the Expert Course and the Paradise Course offered similar conditions—well-set moist snow that felt very close to packed powder. (※Note: the lower part of Paradise was closed today for a competition.)

Mikasa Wing and Panorama A offered the same smooth, easy-to-ski conditions as Central. By the way, Ontake swept the top two spots in this season’s “Resort Food Battle.” The Miso Nabe Set Meal (¥1,800) finished No. 1, and the Sanzoku-yaki (fried chicken) Set Meal (¥1,500) finished No. 2. Both are served at the restaurant on the second floor of Plaza Orion.

A couple from Osaka (pictured) called out to me on the Karamatsu Pair Lift. I had actually met them yesterday at Hakunori. They told me, “The early-morning groomers were incredible. We didn’t realize Ontake’s groomed runs could be this good. And when the strong wind blew the snow into the air, the scenery looked almost magical.” The 4B Course and the Family Course were skiing just as well as the upper slopes today. (※Note: a small section near the start of 4B has some exposed ground, and Karamatsu Avenue remains ungroomed.)
