Shiga Kogen received its first snow of the season on 10/28, exactly the same date as last year. This morning, I drove up National Route 292 from Nakano City toward Yokoteyama, and the light rain had turned to snow around Ichinuma. By the time I reached Kumanoyu, a thin layer of wet snow had begun accumulating along the roadside. Fine snow continued to blow in on a strong, cold wind throughout my visit, making it feel even colder than the temperature alone suggested.

A couple whom I met from Mie Prefecture (pictured) told me, “We came hoping to enjoy the fall colors from the summit of Yokoteyama, but we never expected to find a winter landscape! This is exciting.” The snow depth was between 0 to 1 cm on the lower section of Yokoteyama’s First Slope (first photo) and 1 to 2 cm on the lower section of the Second Slope (second photo). The upper slopes of Higashidateyama and Terakoya were also lightly dusted with snow.
