The “Takamine Mountain Park Legend Cup” took place on the Panorama Course (pictured) on 3/15 (Sun.). The race welcomed a wide range of competitors, from juniors to seniors, with 75 racers entered in the giant slalom (GS) competition, a discipline that tests both speed and technique. During the 9:00 a.m. pre-race course inspection, athletes carefully checked their lines and studied the course.

The competition was divided into 14 classes, with results decided by a single timed run for each racer. After four forerunners—including former Japanese Olympic skier Naoki Yuasa, who competed at the Turin Winter Olympics—ran the course, the race began with the Girls’ Elementary School First and Second Grade class, followed by the Boys’ Elementary School First and Second Grade class (pictured). As the first racers pushed out of the starting gate, a quiet hush settled over the start area. Parents and coaches could also be seen offering encouragement and last-minute advice.

The Panorama Course featured firm groomed snow with a moist surface but a powder-like feel. Racers attacked the course with intensity as they tried to eke out their best performance and capitalize on their training during the winter. Around the 8:30 a.m. opening, skies were calm and overcast, but the clouds gradually broke throughout the day and sunshine began to appear.

The closing ceremony and awards presentation began at 12:30 p.m. The top three finishers in each class received certificates and prizes such as caps, goggles, beanies, T-shirts, and backpacks, either individually or in prize bundles. A rock–paper–scissors prize giveaway featuring similar items drew a lively response, especially from the kids.
