The Tokyo Ski Technical Championships, which also serve as a qualifying event for the All-Japan Ski Technical Championships, were held here at Takamine on 1/24 (Sat.) & 1/25 (Sun.). Before the resort opened, I spoke with four members of the FISCHER student team from Tokyo (pictured), who said, “We’ve seen Snownavi before. We’ll use our youth to our advantage and do our best. We’re nervous, but we’re sure we’ll relax a bit after the first run.” A total of 356 competitors entered the event.

On the first day, the Diving Course (pictured) hosted the events for long turns, short turns, and overall downhill, while the Antelope Course (first photo, background) was used for short turns on ungroomed terrain. The Diving Course featured well-compacted, moist groomed snow with a dry, powder-like feel, topped by around 5cm of light new snow. It was impressive to see the athletes calmly focusing as they waited to start.

On day two, the following events are scheduled on the Diving Course: medium-to-short turns and overall downhill. Awards will be given to the top 10 men and top 6 women in the overall standings. Helping create the lively atmosphere today, the event MC provided live commentary from the lift side while announcing competitors’ points and results.

I also caught up with two members of the Nihon University College of Science and Technology ski team (NUTS), who laughed as they told me, “The yakitori here is seriously good. I was so nervous on my first run that my body felt completely stiff. We’re also planning to compete in the student championships at Iwatake.” At the base of the Diving Course, visitors enjoyed complimentary yakitori, bread sales, alcohol sales, and booths from pole manufacturers and alpine brands. There was also a heated “Spectator Hospitality Tent,” where guests could watch the competition in warmth for ¥2,000 per day.
