The Hakuba47 Play Kingdom opened for the summer season on 7/17 (Fri.)! In order to check it out, I took the Line-8 Gondola up to the Alpine Area at around 1,200 meters, where the hydrangeas (pictured) were at their peak in Foregia, the resort’s Hydrangea Forest. Meanwhile, the Ezo-ajisai variety along the Hydrangea Path just before the Hydrangea Terrace were only beginning to bloom.

The rainy season was officially declared over in the Kanto-Koshin region today, 7/20 (Mon., public holiday), and coincidentally or not, the sun felt intensely hot in the unshaded areas during my visit. The Alpine Adventure course, located under the canopy of the surrounding deciduous forest, however, was cool and comfortable. I met a boy from Tokyo (pictured), fresh off the ZIP Line, who told me, “I wonder if there are any stag beetles around? There are lots of Kunugi and Mizunara oak trees here, so they might be gathering around tree hollows or places where sap is flowing!”

Down in the Base Area, visitors were catching fish by hand in the water park built along the Hirakawa River (pictured), and the snowmelt flowing down from the Northern Alps was wonderfully cold and refreshing! Once caught, the fish can be grilled over charcoal on the spot and eaten on site. (¥1,800 per person for one fish, including grilling.)

The two-day, one-night Family Survival Camp event remains as popular as ever, with families doing everything themselves—from pitching tents and starting fires to preparing dinner, taking part in nighttime activities, and catching fish by hand. The large BBQ tent visible in the background on the left, which also serves as the camp dining area, offers a “Hassle-Free BBQ” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
