Clear skies returned to the Hakuba area this morning after yesterday’s poor weather. Along the ridge between the Happo Cairn and Happo Pond, wind-sculpted snow patterns known as sastrugi (pictured) could be seen in numerous places, providing clear evidence of yesterday’s strong winds. A few millimeters of snow still remained in shaded areas near the top of the Usagidaira Slope, and around 1 cm was still left on the upper section of the Riesen Grat Course.

Many visitors gathered on the deck on the south side of Happo Pond (pictured, far left) this morning, hoping to photograph the snow-covered Hakuba Sanzan peaks reflected in the water. One man I met told me, “I always read your reports! I’m looking forward to the slope reports again this season.” With just over a month to go until the ski resort’s scheduled opening on 12/1 (Tue.), we’ll continue bringing you updates from the slopes, especially when fresh snow falls.
