Royal Hill has clear skies more than 80% of the time, and today was a great example. While the Hakuba, Hokushin, and Myoko areas were under gloomy skies, Shirakabako Royal Hill enjoyed sunshine—and not just sunshine, but clear blue skies. After the No. 1 Quad started running at 8:30 a.m., the view from the top opened eastward to a beautiful view of Mount Tateshina (pictured, far left, 2,531m), one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains.

Visitors stepping onto the slopes from the Yatsugamine Parking Area paused to take in views of the peaks of the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park floating above a sea of clouds, before dropping into the Raicho Course, where the groomed snow was moderately firm and made up of moist snow. Royal Hill opened for the season on 12/13 (Sat.), and with the opening of the Panorama C Course on 1/17 (Sat.), all courses are now skiable with the exception of the Panorama A Course.

The Panorama B and C, Alpen, and Family courses all featured easy-to-ski groomed snow surfaces made up of moderately firm moist snow. In ungroomed areas such as the Free Ride Area between Panorama B and C and the area beneath the No. 1 Quad line, tall grass was still visible, but on the groomed runs supported by snowmaking, there were no bushes at all, and I was able to ski with confidence.

Early this morning, I spoke with a father from Okaya City in Nagano Prefecture, who told me, “I’ve seen Snownavi before. We switched to a Royal Hill season pass last season, and since Kids Plus Premium can be used even with a season pass, our whole family has been able to ski at a great value.” I also received friendly greetings from three guests I met on the lift (pictured), as well as a gentleman from Ueda City. Thank you to everyone who took the time to say hello.
