This morning, I spoke with a man from Saitama (pictured, right) who told me, “I always use your site! My board was made by Kijima Board Workshop, and there are actually quite a few local riders at Ontake who ride these.” Meanwhile, a man from Aichi (pictured left) commented, “I always read your reports! I used to mainly ski at resorts in Oku-Mino, but lately I keep coming back to Ontake because the snow quality is so good.”

On the Expert Course (pictured, far left) today, firm, medium-sized moguls had formed from the upper to mid sections, with 15 to 20 cm of light new snow on top. On the lower section of the course (pictured) through to the Central Course, the slopes were groomed with a well-set, easy-to-ski packed powder surface. The Paradise area was completely ungroomed, and featured an uneven base topped with 10 to 15 cm of light new snow. (Note: Some exposed brush remained on the mid to lower sections).

I had a chat with a couple from Aichi (pictured) who told me, “We always use your site! We bought Ontake season passes and come here every weekend. It started snowing last night, which was great, and the skiing today feels absolutely fantastic.” Ontake Ski Resort, which opened with just one run (the 4B Course) on 12/13 (Sat.), has been operating under “fully open” status (80% or more runs open) since 12/31 (Wed.).

At the top of the resort, winds were strong, and while there were moments of sunshine, dry snow continued to fall. On the Mikasa Wing Course (pictured), which was groomed with a packed powder surface, I was able to enjoy the feel of the 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow on top while picking up good speed. The Family Course was also groomed, with moderately firm, easy-to-ski packed powder conditions.
