The wind grew noticeably stronger as soon as I reached the steep ridge up to Oyama. I spoke with two hikers, descending toward me, from Osaka Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “We arrived in Tateyama yesterday and climbed from Raichozawa to spend the night at Tsurugi-gozen hut. This morning, we traversed Bessan, Masago-dake, Fuji-no-oritate, Onanji-yama, and Oyama. The scenery was incredible—it was a fantastic hike!”

This view shows the entire route from Ichinokoshi Sanso (pictured. foreground) to the summit office of Oyama Shrine (pictured, upper right). The ascent is marked in red and the descent in yellow, keeping hikers traveling in opposite directions on separate lines and preventing bottlenecks where they pass. The standard climbing time for this section is one hour.

Although the separated routes made it possible to climb at my own pace, this was still a demanding section, with a steep gradient and loose rocks underfoot. I continued upward carefully, conscious of the risk of falling, injuring a hand while trying to catch myself, or dislodging rocks that could endanger people below. At one point, shouts went up that someone had been injured, and a Toyama Prefectural Police mountain rescue helicopter was called to the scene.

Reaching the broad scree slope at Sannokoshi (pictured) brought a welcome sigh of relief. The summit office of the Oyama Shrine (pictured, upper right) stood directly ahead, while to the right, breaks in the clouds revealed Mt. Yari, the Hotaka Range, and the ridgelines of both the Omote Ginza and Ura Ginza routes. After catching my breath, I prepared for the steep final push to the summit of Mt. Oyama. (Continued in Mt.
