Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort is open for the summer season from 4/29 (Wed., public holiday) to 11/8 (Sun.). From the newly opened Tenguyama Center House (pictured, foreground), I followed the slope to the Pulse Gondola Tengu (pictured left, pets allowed), which was completed in December 2023. I boarded one of the still gleaming gondola cabins and headed up the mountain.

Around the summit area, the Tengu Deck, Tenguyama Terrace, Sky Swing, BanZip Tengu, and Crystal Ten (Sushi Ozeki) are laid out in that order after exiting the gondola station. BanZip Tengu (pictured; adults JPY2,500, elementary school children JPY1,700), the resort’s most popular attraction, was drawing a steady stream of thrill-seekers from the moment it opened. Secured to an overhead cable by a specially designed pulley and harness, it’s an exhilarating experience where riders launch into the air with sweeping views over Kusatsu Onsen below!

The Mountain Carts at the base of the resort (pictured; JPY1,000 for 30 minutes) were every bit as popular. The course runs across a broad grassy slope, making it possible for groups and families to set off together and race one another to the bottom. “It’s fast and really fun!” said a child visiting from Tokyo with their family. The 10-meter-high Sky Swing (pictured left; adults JPY600, children ages four through elementary school JPY500), billed as the tallest giant swing in Japan, was another big hit. At the start of each ride, a member of staff gives the swing a powerful push to send you soaring. Incidentally, guests who reserve a meal at Crystal Ten (Sushi Ozeki), which serves authentic Edomae sushi, receive a complimentary ride on the Pulse Gondola Tengu. (Continued in Pt. 2)
