With the Hakuba Goryu Telecabin (gondola) beginning operations on 6/6 (Sat.), summer has officially arrived at Hakuba Goryu! Thanks to this year’s exceptionally early snowmelt, opening day welcomed visitors with fresh greenery still glistening from last night’s rain, a remarkable variety of alpine flowers, and crisp, cool mountain air that made for a wonderfully refreshing atmosphere. Please note that the resort is operating under its Early Season schedule through 6/14 (Sun.), and is currently open on weekends only.

Along the Mt. Kotomi Trekking Course, urajiro-yoraku, sarasa-dodan, and tani-utsugi flowers were at their best, while the blossoms of murasaki yashio-tsutsuji and okamenoki had already passed their peak. At my feet, I found abundant displays of Tateyama-rindo, mitsuba-oren, ko-iwagagami, maizuru-so, akamono, and tsumatori-so.

At the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden, the petals of chinguruma had already begun to fall, and some plants were even showing their distinctive feathery seed heads. Miyama-kinpoge (pictured), Hakusan-ichige, miyama-odamaki, Shirane-aoi, komakusa, Naeba-kisumire, miyama-kuwagata, and sakura-so were all in peak condition, while miyama-azumagiku and kobaikei-so were also in bloom.

The participants (pictured) in this season’s first “Botanical Garden Walk with a Curator” tour told me, “It was great fun learning about the alpine flowers!” The Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden will begin daily operations from 6/20 (Sat.), when the “Green Season 2026 Opening Day!” event is held, and Goryu Sanso, perched along the ridgeline of the Ushiro-Tateyama Range, will also open for the season on 6/20 (Sat.).
