The weather has been mostly cloudy since 9/29 (Mon.), as a result of cold fronts and distant typhoons. At 8:30 this morning the temperature at Alps Daira was a brisk 10 °C. On my way up through the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden, along the Alps-Daira Nature Trail, and into the early to middle sections of the Mt. Kotomi trekking course, the sky stayed covered with clouds for long stretches, so I hardly even broke a sweat while climbing.

Just before reaching Ninose-kami I broke through the layer of clouds, and Mt. Goryu came suddenly into view, framed by clouds with autumn colors glowing even brighter under the sunlight. I heard hikers along the trail exclaiming things like, “Wow… it’s so beautiful!” and “We couldn’t see anything just a moment ago—it’s hard to believe!”

The autumn colors along the Mt. Kotomi trekking course were at their peak from Mikaeri-zaka to Ninose-kami, and the north slope of Ichinose-kami (pictured) was especially stunning! From Ninose-kami to Mt. Kotomi the foliage looked just past its best, while from Mikaeri-zaka to Ichinose-kami it was still around 70–80% of peak color.

The autumn colors were around 50–70% of peak at the Jizo Cairn and Jizo-numa (pictured), about 30–50% at the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden, and around 10–30% along the Goryu Telecabin. Around Jizō-numa, the vivid reds of the early-turning momiji stood out the most. By the way, from 10/11 (Sat.) to 10/13 (Mon., holiday), a special “Moss Terrarium” event will be held at the Alps-Daira Plaza.
