Iwatake REPORT

2026.06.07Hakuba Iwatake / Cloudy

For one special weekend each year, Iwatake transforms into a paradise for dogs and their owners. This weekend, on 6/6 (Sat.) and 6/7 (Sun.), the resort hosted MOUNTAIN DOG MARCHE 2026, featuring a “Sky-High Dog Run & Breed Meetups,” a “Scenic Stamp Rally”, and a specialty market (※ free admission). Although the Kanto-Koshin region officially entered the rainy season on 6/7 (Sun.), the day remained mostly cloudy with occasional breaks of sunshine.

The “Sky-High Dog Run & Breed Meetups” was organized by breeds across the two days—terriers, flat-faced breeds, Japanese breeds, and mixed breeds on the first day, followed by dachshunds, poodles, large breeds, giant breeds, and corgis on the second. Once the event got underway, however, neither the dogs nor their owners seemed too concerned about sticking to their assigned groups. Everywhere I looked, dogs of all kinds were happily playing together while their owners enjoyed meeting one another (pictured).

The owner of Casa Kokoro HAKUBA and Cafe & Pub Goldy’s (pictured, right), who had come with their 10-year-old dog Hana, told me, “We’ve been in Hakuba for three years now. Goldy’s welcomes dogs, and we even have our own Doggy Waffles (¥500). Please come and visit us!” Beside her, another guest added, “I always read your reports. I bring Moe-chan to Iwatake every season.”

At the Specialty Market on the south side of the Base Center, eleven vendors had set up booths (pictured). Alongside shops selling jerky, treats, apparel, and custom keychains, several vendors were even offering samples for the dogs to try. Back at the reception area, visitors who had completed the Scenic Stamp Rally took part in a prize drawing, with dog treats and other gifts donated by the exhibitors up for grabs. (※White Plaza, visible in the background of the photo, is being demolished to make way for a new facility!)
