Iwatake REPORT

2026.06.01Hakuba Iwatake / Sunny

Visitors arriving at HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR first thing in the morning were greeted by magnificent views of the three major “Hakuba Sanzan” peaks — from left to right, Hakuba-Yarigatake, Shakushidake, and Hakubadake (pictured) — still streaked with lingering snow, and rising above mountainsides that have grown increasingly green in recent weeks. In the beech forest behind Mountain Harbor, the leaves that were pale green not long ago had deepened noticeably in color. This morning’s combination of clear skies, dry air, and a comfortable temperature of 21°C made for exceptionally pleasant conditions.

A steady stream of visitors gathered at the protruding center section of the terrace to take commemorative photos. Thanks to a new photo service introduced this season, staff members are available to take pictures, making it much easier for entire groups to be included in the same shot. A shade canopy (pictured, left) has also been installed on the north side of the terrace, while the indoor eat-in area on the south side of the building was comfortably air-conditioned.

Guided Buggy Cruises (pictured; ¥2,000 for adults, ¥1,000 for children aged 4 through elementary school age, pets free) proved especially popular during the morning hours. Over the course of about 15 minutes, a staff driver guides guests to some of the best viewpoints around the summit area of Iwatake. Much of the route follows rough dirt tracks, and the scenery feels all the more dramatic while rattling along over the uneven terrain.

“I always read your reports! I came to visit with my son (pictured, left), who is attending graduate school in Nagano,” said a father from Kyoto Prefecture (pictured, right). “We come to Hakuba often in both summer and winter, and we’ve enjoyed activities such as SUP on Lake Aoki and climbing Mt. Karamatsu. This summer, my son plans to traverse from Mt. Hakuba to Mt. Karamatsu.” Elsewhere, the trails at Hakuba Iwatake MTB Park remained dry and fast, while a pleasant breeze from the southeast helped keep conditions comfortable.
