Iwatake REPORT

The alpine disciplines of the National Student Iwatake Ski Competition are being held from 3/14 (Thu.) to 3/19 (Tue.) on Kamoshika (pictured). I spoke with a member of the Meiji University Ski Club “Chasse Neige” who told me, “I love your site. My goal is to finish in the top three overall in the men’s competition this time!”
[Kamoshika]

With the morning’s clear skies, I could see the strong winds blowing large clouds of snow up on the high ridges of the Northern Alps, but there was hardly any wind on the slopes. I ran into a digger at work in the park, who told me he was a fan of Snownavi, and remarked, “Today is THE DAY! We are looking forward to welcoming many people here at the IWATAKE SNOW PARK.” In related news, the “Iwatake Diggers Presents Park Event ‘UNERI’” will be held within the park tomorrow, 3/16 (Sat.). (*Starting at 10:00 a.m., free of charge)
[South Slope]

The South Slope was groomed with fine granular snow, and small clumps of snow were scattered on the surface, but my edges bit well and I was able to link to controlled, comfortable turns. The top and middle sections of VIEW C (pictured) had a groomed, “powdery” wet snow surface that was moderately firm. As I skied further down the slope, the surface became more and more hard-packed, and by the end, it was hard, groomed granular snow.
[VIEW C]

The Sunny Valley course had a groomed granular snow surface that was firm at the beginning (pictured), hard-packed just before the junction with the White Ribbon Course, loose and wet on the south-facing slope in the middle, firm again where the course faces north, and slushy at the end. In other words, the conditions varied greatly depending on the direction of the slope and the exposure to the sun. I caught up with one of the student competitors, who said, “The snow was tightly packed first thing in the morning, but as it loosened up it became a little harder to go fast.”
