Tsugaike REPORT

2023.08.02Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny

The temperature inside the Tsugaike Nature Park at 8:00 a.m. was 13 degrees Celsius, which was significantly, almost unbelievably, cooler than the village below. However, the temperature did rise sharply during the day and I found myself dipping my towel in the refreshing waters of the Ginmeisui spring and wrapping it around my neck in an effort to cool down. The views of the Hakuba Daisekkei snowfield as seen from the Tenbo Marsh (pictured) revealed that there is much less snow there now than what we found when we visited on 8/1 of last year.

As I was taking a break at the Tenbo Marshand enjoying the cool breeze from the southwest, I overheard visitors (pictured) exclaiming how beautiful the views were, and trying to spy hikers climbing up the Daisekkei. I later made my way to the shaded area in the forest covering the Yase-one Ridge, where the wind wafting up from the valley below cooled me down even further.

The watasuge (cotton grass) and ibuki toranoo (bistort) inside the Ukishima Marsh (pictured) appear to be slightly past their peak. Oyama rindou (pasture gentian), a late summer to early autumn flower, has already started to bloom in significant amounts along the route between the Ukishima Marsh and Ginmeisui spring.

In the Mizubasho Marsh and Watasugae marshes, yellow miyama akinokirinso (Cutler’s alpine goldenrod) and white shirane ninjin (false snowparsley) were especially abundant. Between the Watasuge and Ukishima marshes, momiji karamatsu (Japanese false bugbane, pictured) were blooming beautifully, and sankayo (skeleton flower) were already bearing blueberry-like berries.
