Tsugaike REPORT

2023.08.30Tsugaike Nature Park / Partly Cloudy

The Tsugaike Ropeway’s operating hours will shift to an 8:00 a.m. start on weekdays and a 7:00 a.m. start on weekends and holidays during the period from 9/1 (Fri.) to 10/9 (Mon.). Looking out over the Tsugaike Nature Park from the Yase-one Ridge, I could see that leaves of deciduous trees are starting to turn a slight shade of yellow and that the low lying brush around the marshlands, including the Ukishima Marsh (pictured, bottom), has begun to change as well.

Although it still felt hot in the sun, the temperature was a reasonably cool 24°C, and I was able to enjoy a comfortable rest at the Tenbo Marsh observation deck (pictured). In other news, the hiking route up the Hakuba Daisekkei is now closed as of 3:00 p.m. on 8/27 (Sun.) due to insufficient snow and unstable conditions brought on by the unusually warm temperatures and heavy summer rains. Alternative routes to the summit of Mt. Hakuba (Shirouma) include the Hakuba Yari Onsen route and the Tsugaike route.

The arrival of autumn was heralded by not only the beginning of the autumn colors, but also by the alpine plants encountered along the way. In addition to kurotsuribana (Euonymus tricarpus, pictured), berries could be seen decorating the stalks and branches of oba takeshima-ran (watermelon berry), gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood), okame-no-ki (viburnum furcatum), kuromame-no-ki (bog bilberry), and nanakamado (Japanese rowan). In addition, some of the leaves of the nanakamado had begun to turn red.

The Yase-one Ridge (pictured), located in the deepest reaches of the park, was still predominantly cloaked in summer green. The cool breeze coming up from the valley to the south (pictured, right) made it the perfect spot for a short rest. On the route heading down directly to the Ukishima Marsh from there, I again observed many gozen tachibana laden with their red berries by the side of the wooden path.
