Tsugaike REPORT

2022.09.29Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny

The fall leaves within the Chubu Sangaku National Park’s Tsugaike Nature Park are currently around 60 to 70% of their colorful climax, and we’ve now entered the peak autumn season. The color change this year is still around a week slower than that of last year. Plentiful sunshine causes quicker color change, so looking at the forecast, it seems that this weekend may be the perfect time to catch the pinnacle of beautiful autumn leaves.

I ran into a hiker who mentioned, “The further you head into the park, the more beautiful the leaves are.” The beautiful contrast between the leaves of the Kaede (maples) and the blue sky were particularly impressive in around 50% of the area towards the back of the park. (*Pictured here is the direct route between the Ukishima Shistugen and the Yase-one Ridge). On the Yase-one Ridge itself, a majority of the maple leaves had yet to turn color.

Peering out in the direction of Mt. Hakuba Norikura, just beyond the stairs climbing up the Yase-one Ridge, the green of bamboo grass and conifers was contrasted sharply by the yellow leaves of Dakekanba (Erman’s birch) and the bright red leaves of Nanakamado (Japanese rowan). The wind blowing up from the valley along the south-facing slope refreshingly cooled my hot body.

I heard several people passing by excitedly talking about how beautiful the overall views were, and how amazing the yellow leaves of the maples looked. I even noticed a few people so enthralled by the beautiful mountain scenery that they failed to look where they were going and inadvertently stepped off the wooden boardwalk.

*Currently, repair work is underway on a 120-meter section of wooden boardwalk on the eastern side of the Watasuge Shitsugen. As of 10/14, the project is scheduled to be completed in around 10 days, but the new boardwalk will be unveiled to the public next year after the spring snowmelt.
