“Mizubasho Week” is set to take place from 6/21 (Sat.) to 6/29 (Sun.)! The first peak season for the Tsugaike Nature Park is upon us this weekend, with the marshlands covered in blooming mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage). At the Mizubasho Marsh (pictured), the snowmelt has suddenly accelerated to perfectly align with the event timing, and the mizubasho are now about half of their peak. According to current forecasts, the best viewing period is expected to begin around 6/20 (Fri.).

As for the trails, the amount of snow-free boardwalk was about 5% on 6/7 (Sat.), increasing to 15% on 6/13 (Fri.), and has reached 30% as of today, 6/17 (Tue.). With the remaining snow gradually thinning, it’s especially important to watch your step to avoid breaking through and twisting an ankle. The green vegetation lit by the sun felt all the more vibrant and beautiful.
[Kusukawa to Ukishima Marsh]

Following the pink-ribboned bamboo pole markers, I made my way up the narrow Yase-One ridge, where the breeze rising from the valley to the south felt refreshing against my sweaty body. The highlight was the stunning view of the pond below (pictured), surrounded by fresh green and lingering snow. While the shirane-aoi flowers were mostly finished, murasaki yashio azaleas, okame-no-ki, and ko-iwakagami had taken their place, blooming vibrantly.

At both the Watasuge Marsh (pictured), where snow still dominated, and the Ukishima Marsh, the snow cover had noticeably thinned. Near the Kusukawa river, a hollow was filled with a dense cluster of Asian skunk cabbage (mizubasho). This spot was especially unique—it allowed visitors to walk over the lingering snow within the normally inaccessible wetland area and get an unusually close look at the mizubasho.
