Iwatake REPORT

2024.01.25170cm / Snowy

First thing this morning, I ran into a snowboarder from Matsumoto (pictured), who greeted me saying he was a fan of Snownavi and went on to say, “I spotted you from the gondola window and realized you were waiting to take photos of people skiing down the slope. I was the first off the lift and tried to get here right away, but I took a fall on the way.” It’s been snowing heavily both yesterday and today, and this morning dry snow was coming down hard and the wind was blowing lightly from the north.

The ungroomed shortcut from the South Slope to the Sawa Course (formerly known as Hilltop, first photo) had about 25 cm of fluffy new snow from last night, and about 40 cm total accumulation over the last two nights. I was able to get some good speed on the East Slope (pictured), where the moderately firm, groomed powder snow base was topped with around 5 cm of fresh, dry snow. (There was roughly 25 cm of new snow on the ungroomed sides of the slope.)

Like the East Slope, the South Slope was also in good condition with moderately packed, groomed powder snow topped with around 5 cm of fresh snow. The Sunny Valley Course (pictured) also had about 5 cm of fresh snow with a groomed surface that was moderately firm powder at the beginning and end, and firmer wet snow mixed with artificial snow in the middle.

I chatted with a couple from Karuizawa (pictured), who told me, “There is no snow at all in Karuizawa. This is our first time at Hakuba-Iwatake. There was about 30 cm of fluffy fresh snow on the ungroomed area on the front side of the mountain, and it felt great!” In other news, the “Iwatake Thanks Fair” will be held this weekend on 1/27 (Sat.), starting at 10:00 a.m.!
