Heavy snowfall set in around 4:00 a.m. this morning, and the snow began piling up rapidly before our eyes. I spoke with some students from Tokyo Metropolitan Mitaka Junior High School visiting on a winter study trip (pictured) who commented, “The scenery looks completely different from yesterday. The snow is fluffy and feels amazing!” With this long-awaited snowfall, even I couldn’t help feeling just as excited as the kids.

More courses are expected to open at Iwatake from tomorrow onward, but as of this morning the only terrain open was the same two runs as yesterday: the North Slope and East Slope. The North Slope (pictured) featured a well-compacted groomed surface formed from pressed moist snow mixed with new snow, and a generous 20 cm of dry fresh snow sitting on top.

I had a chat with two riders from Aichi and Shizuoka (pictured) who were first in line for the gondola, and they told me, “We always read Snownavi! We got to know each other while waiting in line for the gondola and decided to ride together.” The East Slope (pictured) also delivered a mood-lifting ride, with a nicely compacted groomed base topped by 20 cm of dry new snow.

I crossed paths with staff members from the Patagonia Hakuba store (pictured) who said, “We always read your reports! It’s been a while since we’ve had powder, and it was amazing… but now it’s time to head to work.” The steady, dense snowfall never let up during my time on the mountain, but thanks to the well-maintained, flat base, conditions were still a pleasure to ski.
