Happy New Year everyone. Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field greeted this second morning of the New Year with its summit trees coated in beautiful rime ice, while light, dry snow fell gently across the slopes. I spoke with a couple patrol staff members (pictured) who said, “Happy New Year! It looks like we’re about to get some proper snowfall, so everyone using Snownavi, please come out and enjoy the skiing!” Snow is forecast to continue today and all the way through to 1/5 (Mon.), including down at the base.

The South Slope skied fast and smoothly, with about 3 cm of light new snow sitting on top of a well-compacted, moist groomed base. (Note: there were a few thin snow spots in the midsection of the run). View C and View D, which I visited afterward, offered similar conditions to the South Slope—a firm, moist groomed base topped with around 3 cm of light fresh snow. View D was particularly quiet, with very comfortable skiing conditions early in the day.

This is my second proper look at the Base Center, following my first visit on 12/18 (Thu.). The shop located behind the information counter carries a wide range of items, including Shinshu specialties such as nozawana pickles and wasabi products, along with original resort goods and accessories like goggles, hats, and gloves. Sweets and soft drinks are also available.

Next to the rental shop, toward the back of the building, are coin lockers (pictured, foreground) and a heated changing room (background). The coin lockers come in four sizes to suit different luggage needs (¥200 to ¥600). The restrooms are located at the very back of the shop area and are noticeably more spacious than before.
