Togari is undergoing some big changes. Celebrating its 65th season this winter, Togari Onsen Ski Resort opened on 12/20 (Sat.) following a major renewal. On the same day, Chuka Soba Tsukemen Ichi -hajime- began operations, followed by the opening of “Yakiniku Dragon produced by Jumbo” (pictured) on 12/27 (Sat.). Incidentally, around 11 a.m. this morning, I could smell the sweet, savory aroma of grilled meat drifting across the slope.

Even with all the changes, Togari’s timeless appeal remains the same. Today I found myself being soothed by the wide slopes covered in 100% natural snow and the gently unfolding scenery of northern Shinshu (Nagano) all around me. The Tail Line (pictured, formerly the Mimizuku Course) featured a well-packed, groomed wet snow surface that provided a stable and confidence-inspiring ride, and I was able to carve while maintaining solid edge grip.

Despite it being a weekday, the base area was buzzing with groups of younger visitors. Riding the Earth Tail Lift (pictured) and then the Earth Top Lift brought me to the summit, where the new Sky Top Café is now open. Backbone (formerly the Rinkan Run) featured groomed packed powder that was moderately firm up top, transitioning to well-packed groomed wet snow through the middle and lower sections.

Flowing down from Backbone, both the Eyes Line (formerly the Joyama Course) and Cloud Line (formerly the Champion Course) offered well-packed groomed powder, while the Fang Line (pictured, formerly the Naranoki Course) featured groomed powder with a moderately soft, forgiving feel. By the way, instructors from the Togari Ski School wear these green uniforms; a different instructor I met at the Earth Top Lift unload kindly translated a comment from an Australian family, who said, “The runs are wide open and really easy to ski.”
