The National Student Ski Competition Iwatake (Technical Ski Division) held its Individual Performance Championship Round (pictured) yesterday, 2/26 (Thu.), under clear skies following the rain. In the men’s division, Ren Nozawa of the Hokkaido University Technical Ski Team claimed the collegiate national title. In the women’s division, Saho Kabasawa of the Niigata University Technical Ski Team earned the win and was crowned Japan’s top university skier this season.

Today’s main event was the Individual Performance competition for Rookies. On the lower section of Kamoshika Racing, E course hosted the Overall Descent event, while F Course on Big Bahn ran the Short Turn competition. At the base of each course, teammates and upperclassmen who had already finished their runs cheered loudly for the rookies competing on the big stage for the first time.

Two rookies from Tokyo University of Science WhiteLiber (pictured) told me, “We only started technical skiing after entering university, and this was our first competition.” One added, “I was really nervous, but once it was over and I relaxed, I got hungry and grabbed a crepe,” she said, laughing as she wiped cream from her mouth.

Several days of warm weather, combined with rain on 2/25 (Wed.), have accelerated snowmelt on the lower slopes. The competition wraps up tomorrow, 2/28 (Sat.), with the Team Performance and Open Mix events, where the overall university champion will be decided. As for me, I’m not great at shooting when snow coverage is thin, so between yesterday and today I finally managed to capture enough photos for one full report.
