This morning, I spoke with the owner of kuni’s Country Kitchen, who told me, “At first the snow had just the right amount of give and felt great, but now it’s getting chunky. You should photograph someone else today, not me.” I also met a man from Omachi City (pictured) who commented, “I always read your reports! I’m a HAKUBA VALLEY season pass holder. I’ve got plans later today, so I chose Hakuba Sanosaka because it’s close and I can get in a lot of runs in a short time.”

The clouds overhead gradually thinned, and soft sunlight began to reach the slopes as the morning progressed. Lake Down and Lake View (pictured) offered groomed corn snow that had softened nicely. The first run felt smooth and fast, but within about 30 minutes, the sun-exposed sections started to turn chunky and grabby.

Paradise and Paradise Downhill both started the morning with smooth, groomed corn snow. By shortly after 9 a.m., the surface on Paradise Downhill had turned noticeably chunky. I met an instructor from Hakuba Sanosaka Ski School (pictured) who told me, “I always read your reports. This time of year often means less crowds, so it’s a great time to come.”

The Carving Slope (pictured) also featured smooth, groomed corn snow early on, and my skis tracked well across the surface. It’s hard to believe, but the season now has less than a month remaining. Even though the recent warm temperatures have accelerated the snowmelt, Hakuba Sanosaka still has a solid base all the way to the bottom—with no bushes showing.
