This morning marked the final Sunrise Skiing day of the season! After riding the 2nd Quad, which began running at 6 a.m., I skied down Carmen and Lake View on firm, machine-groomed wet snow, then took the 3rd Quad up to the top of Lake Down, where many visitors had already gathered to wait for the sunrise. I met a man who lives in Hakuba Village who told me, “It looks like we’re going to see a beautiful sunrise. They should do this every day.”

At 6:33 a.m., as the sun began to crest the horizon, cheers and applause broke out all around—“Ohhh!” “Here it comes!” “Wow, it’s so beautiful!” I spoke with a man from Azumino City who told commented, “I always read your reports. During the last Sunrise Operation we saw a sun pillar, but there were too many clouds to actually see the sun itself. Today’s sunrise was absolutely beautiful!”

Paradise (pictured) offered moderately firm machine-groomed wet snow, while Paradise Downhill was slightly firmer underfoot. I had a chat with a group of three from Matsumoto City who told me, “We always read your reports. First runs in the early morning feel amazing, but once the sun hits the snow, it softens a little and becomes even easier to ski.” I carved wide, flowing turns while savoring the lingering glow of the first light of morning.

I also met a skier from Shiga Prefecture who said, “I always check Snowvani. I first came to Hakuba Sanosaka last year and was impressed by how good the grooming was—I’ve been a fan ever since. It feels great again today.” To warm up after the early morning chill, I headed to the second floor of Castor Plaza to enjoy the complimentary cup of coffee included with the early-morning lift ticket.
