It was a crisp start to the day with not even a breath of wind, but the morning chill was sharpened by strong radiational cooling. Simply standing on the Slope felt wonderfully refreshing. I took my first run down the gentler skiers’ left side of Paradise (pictured), where the machine-groomed wet snow was set up firmly, then followed with my second run on the steeper skiers’ right.

Paradise Downhill and Lake Down through Lake View also offered firm, machine-groomed wet snow. Around 9 a.m., as the sun began to soften the surface, conditions became even more enjoyable. By the way, the final Sunrise Operation of the season will take place on 2/22 (Sun.), with the 2nd Quad Lift and 3rd Quad Lift starting from 6 a.m. (Snownavi plans to be there to cover it as well.)

I met a couple from Ogawa Village at the base of the 5th Pair who told me, “Hakuba Sanosaka is close to home, so we come out often. The grooming is beautifully done again today—it’s very easy to ski.” On the groomed section of the New Paradise Slope (pictured), the wet snow was firm, and there was one mogul lane on the skiers’ left side and two on skiers’ right.

Before operations began, a snowboarder who lives in Hakuba Village (pictured) called out to me saying, “I always read your reports. The rime ice and blue sky look beautiful today. I often come to Sanosaka for some quiet practice.” It was then I realized that she was holding one of the snowboard covers available through the Furusato Nozei hometown tax donation program, so I had to ask if I could take a close-up photo!
