Iwatake REPORT

2026.07.22Hakuba Iwatake / Sunny

The rainy season officially ended in the Kanto-Koshin region on 7/20 (Mon., public holiday), and has been followed by a succession of days with temperatures topping 40°C across Japan. At the IWATAKE GREEN PARK Wood Deck, a cool retreat offering both open views and plenty of shade, two visitors from Tokyo (pictured) told me, “We stopped by while visiting family in the area. We’ve been to Iwatake many times, and our dog Tiara loves it here too!”

CHAVATY Hakuba has been serving a limited-edition summer menu since 7/18 (Sat.). I met two visitors from Chiba Prefecture (pictured), who had ordered the Summer Lyrical Nakaizamurai Tea Latte (JPY780), and they told me, “Green tea and strawberries sounded like an unusual combination, but the mellow tea works beautifully with the tartness of the strawberries. It’s delicious.” Other seasonal offerings include a White Peach Sencha Soft Serve (JPY720) and Nakaizamurai Tea & Black Soybean Scone (JPY400).

Shade sails and tarps provide welcome relief from the sun, but there is something uniquely refreshing about the shade of a beech forest. In addition to the cool breeze flowing through the trees, beech trees absorb large amounts of water through their roots and release moisture from their leaves through transpiration, drawing heat from the surrounding air. Whenever a seat became available in area, it was quickly taken.

Despite it being a weekday, the Buggy Cruise and Yoo-hoo! Swing were both extremely popular during this summer vacation period. The guide and driver would stop the buggy at key points along the course, count down, and then accelerate sharply. Cheers, and occasionally screams, rang out across the course alongside the powerful roar of the engine.
