Tsugaike REPORT

2023.06.20Tsugaike Nature Park / Partly Cloudy

The mountain climbing season at Tsugaike is set to officially kick off with the opening of the Hakuba Oike Sanso mountain hut on 7/1 (Sat.). (*In related news, the Kazafuki Sanso mountain hut opened 6/18.) The forests surrounding the Tsugaike Kogen gondola (pictured) are turning a deeper green shade of green with each passing day, and the area has fully transitioned to summer. As I climbed higher, I felt the fresh mountain air flowing in from the open windows.

Arriving at the Nature Park, I was told by a staff member, “Early in the morning there was frost in the park that turned the wooden paths white.” Since the Tsugaike Nature Park, located inside the Chubu-Sangaku National Park, sits at an elevation of 1,900 to 2,000 meters above sea level, a journey there is like taking a step back a season; in this case, back to spring / early summer. I enjoyed my own private hanami thanks to the takanezakura (Japanese aline cherry trees, pictured) blooming between the Mizubasho Marsh and the Fuketsu Wind Cave.

(Erman’s birch trees, pictured). In fact, I couldn’t help but point take out my camera and capture the scene, which became even more vivid in the sunlight. In the Watasuge Marsh and Ukishima Marsh areas, the lovely white flowers known as chinguruma (Aleutian avens) had begun to bloom.

Other plants that impressed me with their vibrant blossoms were kinugasaso (Paris Japonica, pictured), kobaiikeso (veratrum stamineum), shirane-aoi (glaucidium), koiwakagami (fringed galax), enreiso (wake robin), shojobakama (heloniopsis), and murasaki yashio-tsutsuji (Albrecht’s azalea). This is definitely the start of the main season for alpine plants within the Tsugaike Nature Park.
