Tsugaike REPORT

2023.07.03Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny

Today the Nature Park was dressed in vibrant shades of green and buzzing with the energy of summer. It was a pleasant morning with cool air as the sunlight gradually intensified throughout the day. I spoke with staff members at the Tsugaike Visitor Center (pictured) who told me, “The snow melted around 20 days earlier than usual this year, which means that the flowers are blooming 20 days earlier as well.”

The transition from cottongrass flowers to their namesake white cotton wool has also been rapid this year, with 60 to 70% now turned to cotton wool in the Watasuge and Ukishima marshes (pictured). It also appears that this a particularly abundant year for cottongrass. I was particularly impressed by the beautiful harmony of the cottongrass and the small ponds sprinkled throughout the Ukishima Marsh, and am already looking forward to the next time I come back to the park.

I met a hiker from Chiba Prefecture (pictured) while on the way to the Ginmeisui spring from the Ukishima Marsh. She told me that she was staying at UNPLAN Village Hakuba (near the Tsugaike gondola base station) for 2 weeks. She added, “It’s nice and quiet in the Tsugaike Nature Park on weekdays, and I’m enjoying leisurely walks through the park.” I was personally struck by the beauty of the greenery in this area of the park.

I spoke with another hiker from Toyama who I met on the Yase-One Ridge. They told me, “When I left Toyama, the Tateyama mountains were hidden by clouds, so I was worried about the weather, but I was surprised and relieved to see clear skies when I arrived at Tsugaike.” The light clouds that had been hanging in the eastern sky at the foot of the mountains in the morning gradually dissipated during the day, and by 12:00 pm (pictured), the sky was almost cloud-free.
