Tsugaike REPORT

2022.08.30Hakuba Oike / Partly Cloudy

I made it back to Hakuba Oike for the first time in around 2 months. Plants in the Tenguhara marsh area (pictured, background) have begun their slow transformation from summer green to autumn yellow, while the trees stretching from the trailhead to the eastern face of Mt. Hakuba Norikura (pictured, foreground) were still very much green. The only snow remaining on the trail is a short 30-meter section in the area just before the summit of Mt. Hakuba Norikura. The midsummer heat has subsided and the breeze on this day was cool, enabling me to stay strong and keep a good pace on the steep climb.

In areas where snow lingered late into the season, I spotted some Chinguruma flowers (pictured), which typically bloom in midsummer. On the other hand, early autumn flowers such as Iwashobu could be found in the Tenguhara marshland, while other fall flowers such as Asamafuro, Yotsubashiogama and Ezoshiogama were blooming in abundance from the start to the middle portion of the climb up the eastern face of Mt. Hakuba Norikura.

The clear early morning skies were slowly and eventually enveloped in fog welling up from the valley to the east, and by 11:00, clouds forming across the peaks of the Ushiro-Tateyama ridgeline also began to proliferate. The fog and clouds combined to block the sun, which meant that temperatures remained cool even while passing through the boulder field near the top of the climb (pictured).

The summit of Mt. Hakuba Norikura was shrouded in clouds around 11:30, but shortly afterwards gaps emerged between the clouds, revealing blue sky once again. I spoke with a few hikers headed towards the Hakuba Oike alpine lake (pictured), who commented that the scenery was like another world, and that the light reflecting off the water was beautiful.
