Tsugaike REPORT

2022.08.26Tsugaike Nature Park / Light Rain

The kid’s program MIKKETA! is currently underway until 9/25 (Sun.). The Nature Ranger activity (pictured) for children ages 3 and older is a mission-based task where kids set out to take photographs of designated areas throughout the park as well as anything they find interesting. Upon returning to the Visitor’s Center, they are able to print their photos and paste them on to a “mission sheet” to take home with them. Other activities include crafting a Nature Park mascot from Perler Beads, and Treasure Hunting.

The amount of sunshine over the last 10 days has been less than half of that of an average year for the same period. Amongst the lightly falling rain, I spoke with a hiker first thing this morning who told me, “I’m headed up to Hakuba Oike as a day hike. I hope the rain doesn’t get any stronger than this.” Over at the Fuketsu area of the Nature Park (pictured), the usually-refreshing air escaping from deep underground felt almost cold on this cool, damp day.

As I went deeper and deeper into the park the light rain persisted, but I was able to fully enjoy the fresh air filled with plenty of negative ions and the water droplets forming on the foliage of the surrounding alpine plants. Oyama rindo (pictured), a late summer to early fall flower, was blooming in abundance between the Kusukawa river and the Mosen pond. The Ukishima Shitsugen area was also marked by purple flowers in full bloom; specifically the plant known as Torikabuto.

In some of my interactions with passing hikers, I heard comments such as how the temperatures were cool and the feeling of fall was in the area, or how the berries of the Nanakamado plants were beginning to turn red. Indeed the marshes were beginning to ever-so-slightly transform from green to gold, and I was able to finish my walk comfortably without breaking much of a sweat.
