Tsugaike REPORT

2023.10.03Tsugaike Nature Park / Mostly Sunny

On 10/3 (Tue.), the autumn foliage reached its peak in the Tsugaike Nature Park, just as the lowest temperature of the season was recorded. The Ukishima Marsh (pictured) was perhaps the main focal point of the park’s fall colors, with the red hue of nanakamado (Japanese rowan) and the yellow splashes of kaede (maple) interspersed among the green conifers. In addition, the crimson-stained kuromame-no-ki (bog bilberry) that crept at my feet and the autumn leaves that spread across the slopes of the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range were incredibly beautiful, elevating my spirits as I walked on the park’s wooden paths.

My personal favorite spot was an area near the back of the Ukishima Marsh, where you can see the entirety of Mt. Korenge (pictured). The autumn leaves, the blue sky, and the people passing by all combined to create a colorful, dream-like landscape only two short months before it is transformed into a world of white.

In other news, the gondola will start running at 7:00 a.m. during the upcoming three-day weekend, while the annual “Otari Shin-Soba Matsuri” will also nkick off on 10/7 (Sat.) and continue until 11/26 (Sun.). It’s a fantastic time of year for enjoying the Northern Alps, with opportunities for autumn foliage viewing in the morning, fresh soba noodles for lunch, and a relaxing soak in an onsen (hot spring bath) to wind down the day.

From the Watasuge Marsh (pictured) to the Mizubasho Marsh, a small waterfall can be seen cascading down the side of the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range. Some visitors could be seen using their cameras and smart phones to capture the beautify of the waterfall surrounded by the autumn leaves. In step with the peak of the fall colors, the number of visitors to the park had noticeably increased since yesterday, and by 10:30 a.m. it was often necessary to step to the side and let other pass you on the narrow trails.
