Tsugaike REPORT

2023.10.02Tsugaike Nature Park / Overcast

The Autumn leaves within the Tsugaike Nature Park are now around 80% of their expected peak. Despite unforecasted clouds covering the tops of the mountains this morning, I decided to head up and see how the colors were progressing. At 9:00 a.m., the temperature was a brisk 10℃, and I felt comfortable strolling the park with my jacket on.

With the Nature Park being a famous fall viewing spot, visitors to the park were quick to show up in number right from the start of the day. People using their cameras and smartphones to take snapshots of the beautiful scenery was a common site. Around the Ukishima Marsh (pictured) in particular, the presence of clouds actually enhanced the view and the fall-like atmosphere, such as in the moments when the sun shone through briefly on the slopes, or as the fog rolled in and out.

It was also a joy to observe the colorful leaves that closely lined the sides of the trail. The leaves of kaede (maples, pictured) had largely turned a bright shade of yellow, though some were orange, and others mostly still green. The red-colored nanakamado (Japanese rowan) was a show-stealer seen everywhere throughout the park.

Looking back on the approach to the Yase-one Ridge (pictured), myself and others couldn’t help but marvel out loud at the bursts of red and yellow contrasted against the green conifers. Depending on the weather going forward, the peak of the autumn foliage is expected to be in about a week to 10 days. This lines up well with the ongoing “Tsugaike Nature Park Autumn Foliage Week” that lasts until around October 8.
