Happo REPORT

2025.06.07Happo-One / Sunny

Following a temporary planned suspension from 6/2 (Mon.) to 6/6 (Fri.), the Happo Alpen Line resumed operations today, 6/7 (Sat.). Barring severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, lightning, or strong winds, it will operate daily through the final day of the season, 11/3 (Mon., holiday). At Kamaike Marsh (pictured), where the mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage) has just begun to bloom, a man with a large camera remarked, “The snow-covered Northern Alps look absolutely stunning.”

A hiker from Hakuba Village, whom I see every season, commented, “There’s a lot of snow this year!” On the way to Happo Pond, there were three sections of lingering snow: about 30 meters just before the No. 2 Cairn, around 100 meters between the No. 2 Cairn and Happo Cairn (pictured), and another 100 meters just before the pond. However, the snow was well-packed in all areas, so no crampons were needed. I heard cheerful remarks like, “Walking on the snow is fun,” and “Since it’s a bit slippery, it helps to dig your toes into the snow as you step.”

From the very first day of the summer season, alpine flowers such as harurindo (pictured), yukiwariso, miyama azumagiku, ume-hatazao, and kijimushiro have been in bloom. On this clear morning, we were treated to stunning close-up views of several 3,000-meter-class peaks, including the Hakuba Sanzan (Hakuba-Yari, Shakushi, and Shirouma), as well as Goryu and Kashimayari.

It took about 60 minutes to reach the No. 3 Cairn from the Happo-ike Sanso lodge. A member of the Green Patrol I met along the way advised, “Due to the remaining snow, you’ll need snow gear such as crampons if you’re heading toward Maruyama Cairn or Mt. Karamatsu. Please come well prepared.” The summer season for the Karamatsu hut near the summit of Mt. Karamatsu will begin on 6/21 (Sat.). Around 9:30 a.m., thin clouds moved in front of the sun, making it feel chilly enough to put on a windbreaker.
