Hakuba Tsugaike WOW! is currently open on weekends only through 7/13 (Sun.), but will switch to daily operation beginning on 7/19 (Sat.) and lasting through 8/31 (Sun.). Also starting on 7/19, the POCHADAS water activity (pictured, pond—adults JPY2,800, elementary school children ¥2,500 / 90 minutes) will open for the season! In contrast to the drizzly weather the previous day, today, 7/6 (Sun.), brought summery blue skies.

I came across a boy from Niigata (pictured) who was taking on the KABEDAS wall challenge while his family cheered him on, calling out, “You’ve got this! Just a little more to the goal!” Afterward, he also tried the TOBIDASU jump and told me, “The moment it jolts right before you launch was a little scary, but it was very fun!”

I also spoke with a family from Shizuoka (pictured) who told me, “We’ve been staying at Courtyard by Marriott Hakuba since 7/4 (Fri.). We’ve been having a blast here at WOW! since this morning!” Many visitors could be seen heading over to the dome-shaped shade area set up right nearby, taking breaks and staying hydrated while enjoying the attractions.

At the Tsugaike Nature Park, where the mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage) have mostly finished blooming, only two short snowy sections remained: one near the Fuketsu Wind Cave area and another roughly 8 to 10 meter section past the Kusukawa River crossing. In the Mizubasho, Watasuge, and Ukishima Marshes, miyama kinpoge (pictured), Shinano kinbai, chinguruma, kobaikei-so, and iwa-icho were in full bloom. Along the forested trail, many sankayo and kinugasa-so were also seen.
