Today I tried out the Nozawa Onsen Zip Skyride, which stretches 652 meters in length and can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h. (*Adults ¥2,000, Children ¥1,500 per ride). Because the starting point is quite high up, I felt a rush of excitement while putting on the seat-style harness and waiting for my turn. Also, the Zip Skyride is compatible with the SAVREQ video recording service, so it’s possible to capture your ride on film.

The seat-style harness felt just like sitting on a swing. As the staff counted down, “5, 4, 3, 2, 1”—I was released. Initially, I experienced a brief floating sensation as I dropped in, then quickly accelerated. The thrill of the speed and the rush of adrenaline made me shout, “Wow! This is amazing!”—and before I knew it, I was already at the finish.

Over on the summer slope, I spoke with a high school student from Niigata Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “I’m training for this year’s junior technical competition. The practice conditions here are excellent.” A man from Nagano prefecture also shared with a laugh, “Hey Snownavi. I skipped work to come ride today, haha. They regularly replace the mats here, so it’s really smooth and easy to ski, and I come often.” Many advanced skiers could be seen carving clean, precise turns.

At Sutaka-ko (pictured), a small lake at an elevation of 1,300 meters that can be circumnavigated in about 10 minutes, I could clearly hear a chorus of birdsong echoing through the trees. In related news, the Sutaka-ko Lake Campground, located along the lakeshore, will open for the season beginning on 8/9 (Sat.). Also, don’t miss the stargazing tour taking place uisng the Nagasaka Gondola on 8/2 (Sat.), 8/9 (Sat.), 8/10 (Sun.), 8/16 (Sat.), 9/13 (Sat.), and 9/14 (Sun.)!
