Nozawa REPORT

2025.08.09Nozawa Onsen / Mostly Sunny

The MTB course accessible via the Nagasaka Gondola (pictured, length 3,129m) features eight trails spanning a vertical drop of 700 meters, with a total length of approximately 10 kilometers. A family of three visiting from Chiba Prefecture (photo) shared, “We rented mountain bikes and took a free lesson at the base before heading up. The scenery here is completely different from Nozawa Onsen in winter—it really surprised us. During our stay, we thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the hot springs.”

The layout includes three trails on the gently sloping upper slope and five more on the lower slope, separated by a central “rest area.” Two intermediate-level courses (pictured) wind through the pristine beech forest in the upper section, offering a refreshing ride in the cool shade of the trees. The Nagasaka Gondola conveniently allows MTB riders to bring their bikes into the cabin, with no step between the boarding area and cabin floor—making loading and unloading smooth and easy.

The other upper trail, a beginner-level course (photo), stretches gently from the top of the Uenotaira Slope all the way down to the base of the Paradise Slope. With its wide grassy path, excellent visibility, and smooth footing, it offers an unbeatable sense of openness and freedom. In contrast, the five trails on the lower section—built into steep terrain—shift dramatically in atmosphere, winding primarily through forested areas.

For those less confident with off-road riding, the five lower trails also offer the option to ride on paved roads—so you can enjoy the experience with peace of mind. Additionally, by joining the “Nozawa Onsen MTB Trail Guided Tour” (advance reservation required; available from 9:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00), riders can explore courses suited to their skill level with expert guidance.
