Tsugaike REPORT

2025.08.04Tsugaike Nature Park / Mostly Sunny

On 8/1 (Fri.), a new foot (ice) bath facility opened next to the gondola base station (pictured, free to use, open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)! The water is sourced from Northern Alps snowmelt, and is refreshingly cold, which is perfect for cooling off after a hike or other outdoor activity. In winter, this same spot is going to be filled with hot spring water and transform into a hot onsen footbath.

I broke through the layer of clouds while riding the Tsugaike Ropeway, and excited voices filled the cabin around me, with people commenting, “Wow, we can see the mountains!” and “The sea of clouds is so beautiful!” At the entrance to the Tsugaike Nature Park, a staff member at the Visitor Center told me, “Yesterday evening’s rain seems to have brought the greenery back to life.” One of the most striking sights of the day was a beautiful orange kuramayuri (pictured) blooming beside the boardwalk of the Mizubasho Marsh, and covered in fresh dew drops.

Around 9 a.m., clouds began to rise up from the valley below, and by 10 a.m., they had started to block the sunlight. While the humidity felt slightly higher this morning, the pleasant 20°C temperature lived up to my expectations, and the light breeze blowing throughout the day made for a comfortable hike. Looking back from just before the Mosen-ike area (pictured), I was treated to beautiful views of the vibrant expanse of lush green marshlands, the perfect image of summer.

After enjoying a lovely cluster of purple Tateyama-rindō flowers in a small marsh just before the Tenbo Marsh, I skipped the marsh itself and continued onto the Yase-One Ridge trail. A noticeably cooler breeze greeted me there, and the trail was lined with blooming Hakusan-ominaeshi, miyama-hotsutsuji, and sobana, all at their peak. Along the eastern route leading from Yase-One down to the Ukishima Marsh, I spotted beautiful gozen tachibana (pictured) in full bloom.
