At Hakuba Tsugaike WOW!, Buggy Cruises (pictured) are running for a limited time through 8/31 (Sun.). I spoke with a driver, who told me, “Many of our guests tell us the Buggy Cruise was the most fun thing they did!” The expansive course sets off next to the Tobidas Tower, climbs up to the Han-no-ki No. 3 Quad lift station, doubles back to descend the upper part of the Karamatsu Slope, and loops around the Pochadas pond before returning to the starting point.

In unison with the countdown by the staff—“3, 2, 1, Tobidaaa—!”—I watched as a girl (pictured) sped down the slope and flew off the jump. She later told me, “I was scared before the start, but once I went, it felt amazing and was so much fun!” With clear skies on the final day of the Obon holiday, which was up to nine days long this year, every attraction at WOW! was buzzing with visitors.

Looking back at the Tsugaike Nature Park at the start of the morning, a cool breeze was sweeping through the marshes. At the Watasuge Marsh (pictured) and Ukishima Marsh, the mosengoke had taken on a reddish hue, the leaves of iwa-icho were beginning to yellow, and iwa-shobu flowers were blooming in abundance. Over at the Mizubasho Marsh, oni-shiogama, miyama akino-kirinso, and oba-senkyu could be seen in large numbers.

Along the forested trail connecting the marshes, momiji-karamatsu (pictured), Hakusan-furo, shirane-ninjin, and Ibuki-toranoo were in bloom, while numerous berries could be seen on oba-takeshima-ran, sankayo, gozen tachibana, kuromame-no-ki, and okame-no-ki. At the Ukishima Marsh, yachi-torikabuto and oyama-rindo were just beginning to bloom.
